MAILBAG: Access to healthcare more of a moral issue than a financial one

By Jack Ferver, Prairie du Sac

Providing health insurance for all Americans is today’s defining issue between Republicans and Democrats, and after seeing Republicans win the battle for votes in Maine and New Jersey it would seem that the majority of voters are more concerned with keeping money in their pockets than they are with providing health insurance for the 40 million Americans without it.

To me this issue is more of a moral issue than it is a money issue, and one that I think democrats must win now, even if it costs them elections down the road.

Recognizing that most Americans continue to place a high value on our free-enterprise system, but we are still a nation with a big heart that tries to provide a safety net for those most in need, why wouldn’t it work to provide the millions already eligible to receive food stamps, stamps that can be redeemed by private food vendors, health stamps that can be redeemed by private healthcare vendors?
