Neu, Falcons get by Randolph
By TOM KAHL - Sports Editor
HUSTISFORD — Austin Neu doesn't play on the line on either side of scrimmage or snap the ball. That covers the very short list of things the senior doesn't do for Hustisford's football team. He put on another terrific jack-of-all-trades display in the Falcons' 20-14 Small Trailways win over Randolph Friday. "You think you get him and he leaks through," Randolph coach Zach Kouba said. "You don't get a sense from film how good he is until you see him in person." Neu threw for two touchdowns but was just as impressive on the other side of the ball. He forced two of Randolph's three turnovers, including a game-sealing interception on the play after A.J. Schick recovered an onside kick with 2 minutes, 42 seconds to play. "Our defense held us in there," Hustisford coach Dan Simon said. "Normally if we don't score points, we don't win. Randolph took some things away from us." It was the Falcons that took even more away from the Rockets. Hustisford turned back two 4th-and-short tries by the Rockets inside their own 20 and converted two Randolph fumbles into scores in the span of 1:23 late in the third quarter. "I thought we'd be able to run on that team," Kouba said. "We shot ourselves in the foot and that seems to be a weekly event for us." After the first stop by the Falcons, Neu drove the Falcons 90 yards, capped by his 2-yard toss to Aaron Fenner on fourth down. Of the quality plays Neu made on that drive, none topped his flip to Adam Falkenthal for 18 yards on 3rd-and-10 after he spun away from three defenders. Hustisford squandered another drive late in the half when Falkenthal couldn't get out of bounds after getting to the Rocket 8. Hustisford wasn't able to get its kicking unit on the field before time expired. Randolph got on the board when Jared Reuter blocked Wade Falkenthal's punt out of the end zone for a safety with 5:16 left in the third quarter. The play after the ensuing free kick from Neu, Matt Dachs fell on a fumble by Kyle Kelm and the Falcons took advantage. Neu went 4-for-5 and picked up two first downs running on the eight-play drive. Aaron Fenner scooted up the middle from four yards out for a 13-2 lead. Neu stripped Schick on the next Rocket play from scrimmage with Allen Fenner recovering at the Randolph 23. Two plays later, Neu rolled right and located E.J. Katzer for an 8-yard TD strike. "Austin just yanked the ball out," Simon said. "He's such a gamer. "I can't say enough about our offensive line. Katzer comes in and catches a TD pass. We have a lot of kids banged up playing against guys twice their size." Just as the Falcons looked to run away with the contest, the Rockets took five plays to score behind Kelm, who made his first start at quarterback. He found Corey Pfeffer from 29 yards out but an illegal substitution penalty led to a failed conversion pass. Hustisford turned it over on downs but Randolph went nowhere in three plays and Kelm was sacked on a fake punt attempt at his own 24. The Falcons handed it right back on downs but a sack and a penalty forced the Rockets to punt. Neu tried to seal the game with a sneak on 4th-and-short but coughed the ball up as Brian Kampstra recovered with 3:32 to play. Three plays later, Kelm found Jon Roberts on a 14-yard scoring toss. "Kyle manages the game well and throws a nice ball," Kouba said of Kelm. "He did very well for his first start." Kelm finished 7-of-12 for 126 yards on the night. Neu was 14-for-25 with 192 yards passing and another 60 on the ground. Hustisford (3-1, 2-0 Small) hosts Green Lake next week. Randolph (1-3, 0-2) will entertain arch-rival Cambria-Friesland.
