Mayville denies Horicon

MAYVILLE — As if anyone needed a reminder on the plummeting value of real estate, Horicon provided one Friday night.

The Marshmen had nine possessions, one of which was a kneel-down to end the half. Seven of those ended in Mayville territory and five of them got inside the Cardinal 27 or deeper.

Horicon got only seven points out of it. Coupled with two long touchdown runs and the Marsh Bowl trophy stayed in Mayville with a 19-7 Flyway football win.

"I have to give them a lot of credit because they outplayed us but we only gave up one score," Mayville coach Tom Noennig said. "We had all sorts of things happen but that's the sign of some good kids with great hearts."

Mayville (4-1, 3-0 Flyway) needs only a win against struggling North Fond du Lac to secure a playoff berth. Horicon (3-2, 1-2) will have to find a way to knock off Kettle Moraine Lutheran or St. Mary's Springs, both of whom are ranked by The Associated Press, to qualify.

"It was frustrating," Horicon coach Jim Trost said. "We're asking sophomores to make plays but you can't give up on them.

"That's no excuse. Our kids played hard but Mayville made some adjustments and you have to give them credit."

Despite its first two drives getting into Mayville territory, Horicon couldn't score. On just its fifth play from scrimmage, Jared Nehls took a trap and bolted past the Horicon secondary 71 yards with 1:54 left in the first quarter.

The Marshmen reached the Card 22 on their next possession but turned it over on downs. Horicon got a break when Eric Duellman forced Kevin Goard to fumble and Aaron Garcia recovered at the Mayville 48.

Five plays later, Horicon tied it up. Mike Michalovitz hit Andy Mueller, who finished with eight catches for 144 yards, on a slant and he broke a tackle for a 23-yard score.

"For not playing wide receiver before this week, I thought Andy did a great job," Trost said.

Mayville took the second half kickoff and marched 78 yards on 10 plays, all runs. Horicon helped extend the drive twice by turning potential third-and-longs into first downs by penalty before Mike Gionet went up top to Mike Griepentrog for a 19-yard scoring toss.

Horicon drove to the Card 24 but Andy Warczytowa picked off Michalovitz in the end zone. Cody Apfelbeck left with an injury and his absence would be felt on the next drive by the Marshmen.

Dymon Stern fumbled on the first play but was lucky to get it back. After Michalovitz hit Mueller for a 38-yard pass, Connor Baker lost the handle with Warczytowa recovering at his own 25.

Mayville would put the game away three plays later. Sophomore Nick Hasch bolted 65 yards off left tackle with 7:27 to play.

"They're very aggressive but I thought we could run the ball better on them in the first half," Noennig said. "They really dominated in the first half but maybe we wore them down a little in the second half."

Horicon was able to get into Mayville territory again but came up empty. Mueller's drop of a Michalovitz pass deflected in the air for Aaron Schaefer to pick off.

Nehls finished with 109 yards on seven carries. Michalovitz threw for 240 yards in a losing effort.

Mayville hosts KML next week while North Fond du Lac visits Horicon.
