Small Trailways roundup: Pirates dig deep hole
By Citizen Staff
FALL RIVER — Fall River dug itself a 22-point first half hole and was its own worst enemy trying to dig out of it in a 22-6 Trailways Small loss to Madison Abundant Life Friday. The Pirates saw one drive in the first quarter end with a fumble on the Challengers' five yard line and another apparent touchdown, with eight seconds left in the first half, called back by a holding penalty. "Two lost opportunities like that in the first half come back to bite you, especially when you own the second half," Pirate coach Brian Zacho said. While the Pirates (1-2, 1-4) controlled the final two quarters, the Challengers (2-1, 2-3) were impressive in the first two. They put their first points on the board on their opening drive when Leo Schaefer scored from 13 yards out with 7:26 left in the frame. The Pirates' chance to answer the score was lost when defensive lineman Jimmy Treslley stripped Pirate quarterback T.J. Patrick of the ball on the Challenger five. MAL quarterback T.J. Helgren put the Challengers up 14-0 when he went six yards up the middle for a TD with 4:57 left in the first half.. On the Pirates' ensuing drive, Challenger linebacker Stevin Greene stepped in front of a Patrick pass and raced down the right sideline for a 51-yard score, and with the two-point conversion, the Challengers led 22-0 with 2:12 left in the half. Fall River showed a spark in the waning seconds as it got within the Challengers' five with seconds left in the half. However, Chris Fauser' touchdown with 8.7 seconds left was nullified by a holding call. The Pirates finally got on the scoreboard with 6:44 left in the third quarter when Dexter Oelke capped a 57-yard drive with a 12-yard TD run. While momentum seemed to shift to the Pirates, they weren't able to find the end zone again, a fact that frustrated Zacho. "The kids have come out flat the last two weeks. They are fighting a lot of stuff and I guess I don't know the answer. "If I did I would have it fixed," he said. Fauser finished the night with 117 yards rushing on 16 carries for Fall River, which will travel to Cambria-Friesland next Friday. Randolph 20 C-F 7 RANDOLPH — Randolph scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter Friday to down rival Cambria-Friesland, 20-7, in Small Trailways football action. "It was a defensive struggle for both teams," Randolph coach Zach Kouba said. "It was a game of field position and we got the better end of it." Randolph (2-3, 1-2 Small) caught a big break late in the first half when Ben Syvertson picked off a Mitchell Katze pass and raced 20 yards for a touchdown with 2 minutes, 23 seconds left. "That was big," Kouba said. "Ben read (the pass) well and it was a big momentum boost for us going into halftime." The Toppers (0-5, 0-3) tied things up midway through the third quarter when Katze found Sam Wiersma for a 5-yard score. Randolph took the lead for good when another interception helped set up Kyle Kelm for a 1-yard plunge early in the fourth quarter for a 13-7 lead. A fumble late in the game by C-F sealed the victory for the Rockets as Brian Kampstra rumbled in from 2 yards out with 4:52 remaining. Randolph had 109 yards on 34 carries with most of its damage coming in the second half. "Our offensive line played extremely well," Kouba said. "They weren't going to let us lose this football game in the second half." Randolph heads to Williams Bay next Friday while C-F hosts Fall River. Green Lake 43 Hustisford 20 HUSTISFORD — Green Lake broke open a 14-all tie with 29 points in less than 10 minutes on its way to Friday's 43-20 Small Trailways football win at Hustisford. "We did a poor job of blocking and tackling," Hustisford coach Dan Simon said. "We only had one penalty but it got a touchdown called back when we could have had the lead in the third quarter. "We had a couple of turnovers that hurt." Hustisford struck first on Ryan Connolly's 3-yard scoring run midway through the first quarter. Austin Neu, who tacked on the conversion run, found Wade Falkenthal for the first of two 4-yard TD catches with 17 seconds left in the first half to tie the game. Falkenthal finished with nine catches for 112 yards, including another TD catch early in the fourth quarter. Brad Brooks had scoring runs of 26 and 45 yards late in the contest and finished with 151 yards on 15 carries. Cody Krohn had an interception for the Falcons. Hustisford (3-2, 2-1) visits Madison Abundant Life next week. Green Lake stays unbeaten in three Small tries and is 3-2 overall.
