LTC football: Happy Homecoming for BD
By JAMES WOLD - Assistant Sports Editor
When Beaver Dam's Devin Kellenberger usually strikes, its out of the offensive backfield. Friday night against Slinger, he chose another route. After Slinger scored to pull within a point midway through the second quarter, Kellenberger took the ensuing kickoff and bolted 85 yards for a touchdown. The score energized the Golden Beavers the rest of night as they went on to a 28-12 Little Ten victory on Homecoming night. "Coming from a special teams coach, it's the biggest type of play," BD coach Tim White said. "That play severed their momentum and gave it back to us." Kellenberger had a great view of his blockers and open grass on his way to the score. "I saw three guys ahead of me and saw (Ethan Piette) absolutely jack up somebody from Slinger," Kellenberger said. "From there, I just turned on the jets." The Golden Beavers (3-3, 2-2 LTC) wore down the Owls with a physical rushing attack. In addition to his kick return, Kellenberger had 224 yards on 32 carries. Mitch Aplin added 46 yards on 14 attempts. "They were firing their linebackers at us," Kellenberger said. "I don't mind being the bulldozer once in a while." Kellenberger opened the scoring by punctuating a seven-play drive with a 2-yard plunge in the end zone. Keying the drive was a 50-yard strike from Mitch Berg to Steve Propst on a 3rd-and-4. BD put the game away against Slinger (2-4, 1-3) midway through the fourth quarter as Berg found 6-foot-4 Dan Docter for a jump ball and a 7 yard touchdown for a 21-6 lead. "We've worked hard with Mitch and he wasn't taking his full three-step drop last week (at West Bend East)," White said. "He's gaining confidence in his throws." But the effort wasn't without flaws. BD did throw two interceptions deep in Slinger territory, fumbled once and committed 65 penalty yards. Two of those were roughing penalties that helped lead to both of the Owls' scores. Then again, BD had an answer for every miscue. Kellenberger put the finishing touches on his night by taking nine straight handoffs on a 56-yard drive, ending with a 3-yard touchdown. "We've shown that we have a burst and can score from anywhere," Kellenberger said. "Now, we've shown we can sustain drives." BD heads to Hartford next week and White's excited about his team's potential. "We're still taking it one week at a time," White said. "Hartford's been one of the higher eschelon teams in the Little Ten."
