Corn growers donate to food pantry
A van-load of corn flakes cereal was donated to Dodge County Food Pantry in Beaver Dam by the Wisconsin Corn Growers Association in recognition of the state's annual Food Check-Out Week. WCGA donated 132 boxes of corn flakes, representing one box for each member of the state legislature. "We are very proud of the fact that this nation's corn growers are the most productive in the world but we also want consumers to realize that farmers are suffering financially today," said Cal Dalton, Pardeeville corn grower and WCGA member. "While that car-load of cereal cost us more than $450 at the local Piggly Wiggly, it contains only about $5 worth of corn." The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that prices received by farmers are as low as two to three cents per item for products such as bread and cereal. On average only 19 cents of every dollar spent on food works its way back to the farm. As part of the National Corn Growers Association, WCGA represents corn grower interests nationally and internationally and also sponsors the annual corn yield contest.
