A home was destroyed by fire at 51 James St., Markesan. The owner of the home, Diana Spiering, reported the blaze at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Markesan, Kingston, Dalton, Ripon, Green Lake and Princeton fire departments responded.

Markesan Fire Chief Tom Wilde said the home is considered to be a total loss, although its is still standing. Wilde said, "Spiering was alone in the house when she became aware of the fire. She went to a neighbor's house to call in the alarm."

Four cats died in the blaze.

Firemen were at the scene until 5 p.m.

Wilde said that fire investigators are still trying to get into the basement to determine the cause of the fire.
