Waupun bar settles tax issue, opens a little late

WAUPUN — He may have lost five hours of business, but that's OK with Dan Ganz.

Ganz, the owner of Spirits Bar and Restaurant, ran into trouble with the Department of Revenue Compliance Bureau, who wrote a letter to city clerk Kyle Clark last December stating that Ganz does not hold a valid seller's permit "and the department does not intend to issue a permit until all tax matters have been resolved."

At the June city council meeting, the board granted Ganz a permit to operate another year, contingent upon his getting things squared away with the Department of Revenue by June 30.

Ganz missed the deadline, so Wednesday the establishment didn't open for lunch.

However, a few hours later Clark got the go-ahead from the Department of Revenue saying the issues are resolved, and the license can be given.

"I'm on my way to Clark's office to pick up my license and we'll be open as soon as I get back to Spirits," said an upbeat Ganz midafternoon on Wednesday.

Spirits opened in downtown Waupun four years ago.
