McGann pitches Baraboo Bandits to rout of Nekoosa, 12-2

After a rough first inning where Nekoosa hit a couple frozen ropes en route to scoring one run against Bandits starter Sean McGann, the Baraboo righty settled down. McGann held the visitors to one more run the rest of the way on the way to a 12-2 victory for Baraboo in five innings at Mary Rountree Field on Tuesday night.

Helping McGann’s cause was his teammates, who did some mashing of their own in the bottom of the second inning. The Bandits strung together five straight hits, mixed in with a pair walks and then followed by two more hits, turning the second frame into an eight-run inning as the hosts took control of the contest.

“Just consistancy at the plate,” Baraboo head coach Tim Luger said of his team’s big inning. “Stringing hits togheter, threw a couple walks in there and boy, it just exploded on them.”

With his team well in front, McGann, who was making his first start of the summer Legion season, put together a strong performance for the Bandits, who moved to 5-2 on the summer. He finished with four strikeouts.

“A little bit shaky at the start. His curveball wasn’t working really well, but the second inning it started working and they had a hard time hitting it after that,” Luger said. “Once his curve ball started working, and his changeup started working better too, then he got his fastball working and he was off to the races.”

Sam Seymour led the Baraboo offense, going 3 for 3 with a double. Paul Luger and Nathan Murphy also had doubles for the Bandits.

Baraboo, who is ranked seventh in the latest Class AA Wisconsin American Legion Baseball Poll, will return to action on Friday. The Bandits will play four games in three days at the annual Wisconsin Rapids Tournament.
