First family night attracts dozens

It's safe to say Gary Williams accomplished his goal of getting more families out to the Hartje Outdoor Learning Center last Thursday. Dozens of families enjoyed a night by the campfire — singing, storytelling and hiking — all at no cost.

Williams is co-coordinating the use of the Hartje Center, a 128-acre nature preserve owned by the Reedsburg School District. He planned the event not knowing what kind of turn-out to expect.

"I think we threw Mr. Williams for a little bit of a loop," said Kris Houtler, a youth services librarian who assisted at the event. "I think he really met his goal."

The Hartje Center is open to all families all the time, though few ever enjoy the groomed trails and natural setting outside a school-sponsored event.

"Kids today are suffering from 'nature deficit disorder.' It's something we're battling in society," Houtler said.

Williams is planning a monthly family night to showcase the center and help people become what he calls "nature detectives." He's also trying to promote the use of the Hartje Center's new challenge course, which is a team building and trust activity for businesses, community groups and children's organizations.

"It's about getting people out of their comfort zone and to show them a little bit about the Hartje Center," Williams said. "Long-term I'd like to get people out there once a month, even during cold times."

The next family night will be on October 30 with details to follow. To schedule a chance to try the challenge course with your organization call Williams at 524-2028.
