Pirates improve to 14-5, stand in 1st place in west

Reedsburg shelled Richland Center — after  dropping an inter-league game at Sparta — as the Pirates improved their overall record to 14-5 heading into Wednesday night's game with Elroy.

Saturday the Pirates took on the Sparta Miller team at Sparta and fell 8-3.

Sparta's Joe Schnoor pitched a complete game six-hitter as Miller improved to 10-3 while the Pirates fell to 13-5. Sparta led 4-0 going into the top of the fourth where Trevor Berndt scored on a pair of sacrifices by Don Molitor and Adam Dempsey, and an error on Sparta third baseman Kevin Barth.

Leading 4-1 Sparta added a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth and led 8-1 going into the top of the eighth, where the Pirates scored on an RBI sac fly by Josh Krueger that scored Berndt. Mike Lennon scored Reedsburg's third and final run of the game in the top of the ninth, scoring on an RBI double by Kris Rosholt.

The Pirates then turned around and played Richland Center  Sunday and picked up a 10-0 win as Steve Hedgepath held the visitors to just two hits. Hedgepath struck out 14 of the 29 hitters he faced, and retired nine of the first 10 to start the game.

Reedsburg scored three times in the bottom of the first off Richland Center's Rick Haas.

With two outs Paul Molitor singled and Kris Rosholt walked, and Steve Considine followed with an RBI base hit that scored Molitor. Don Molitor followed with another RBI single and after Josh Krueger walked, Marcelino Alonso drove in Considine with the Pirates fourth base hit of the inning.

Hedgepath retired the side in order in the top of the second, and again in the third inning. Aaron Beranek reached base to start the fourth for Richland Center with a base hit to left, but Hedgepath retired Lewis Vieth on a fly to left, got Mike Hemling to ground out to short, and struck out Max Brandt to end the inning.

An RBI double by James Corwith put the Pirates up 4-0 as Alonso scored for the second time in the game in the bottom half of the fourth inning.

Hedgepath continued to cruise through the fifth, again sending Richland Center down 1-2-3. The Reedsburg right-hander followed that with a run of seven straight outs before hitting Louie Ray with one out in the eighth.

The Pirate offense added three runs in the sixth on three straight base hits by Krueger, Alonso and Mike Lennon, and a two out single by Paul Molitor that put Reedsburg up 7-0. Reedsburg then reached double digits with a three run eighth inning as Molitor doubled to score Travis Van Zile and James Corwith, and Molitor would later score on an error on Richland Center to make the final 10-0.

With the win Reedsburg moved into sole possession of first place in the West division at 7-2 while the Caz Reds are second at 6-3.

Up next for the Pirates will be a 7 p.m. game tonight against the Elroy Outlaws at Nishan Park.

Reedsburg will travel to Wisconsin Dells Thursday and Pine Bluff Sunday before returning home July 4 to take on Plain at 1 p.m.
