Civil War reenactment set for June 20, 21

The village of Sauk City will turn back its clocks to the Civil War era June 20 and 21 during the Sauk City Civil War weekend. All events will take place at the August Derleth Park and the Sauk City Historic Park.

According to a press release submitted by the Sauk City Historic Preservation Committee, the family event is an opportunity to learn about the lives of soldiers and civilians during the war and how people from this area were involved.

War camps are open both days at 9 a.m. for residents to tour and learn from the Time Keepers, Navy and Army units that will be in the August Derleth Park. The park closes at 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

There will be civilian and military demonstrations. The artillery and infantry drill and demonstrations are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the battlefield skirmish is from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the August Derleth Park. Pioneer demonstrations start at 9 a.m. on Saturday and include apple pie baking, quilt show, crocheting, butter churning, ice cream making, log sawing, prairie flower walk and Civil War storytelling by local author Carol Troestler.

The field hospital will be operating and members of the public can volunteer to be patients.

Inside the Fair Valley Schoolhouse at the historic park there will be Civil War artifacts on display, plus exhibits created by middle school social studies students studying the Civil War.

According to the press release, throughout the day there will be a scavenger hunt. Children are given a sheet filled with words to define and the only way to discover what the words mean is to go into the camps and talk to the reenactors. The questions will revolve around Abraham Lincoln in celebration of his birthday.
