Daniel Spees
Daniel Woodrow Spees, 91, of New Lisbon, Wis., died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at Hess Memorial Hospital in Mauston. Daniel was born Feb. 20, 1918, in Watertown to Benjamin Harrison and Anna Marie (Washkowitz) Spees. He lived in Lake Nebagamon when he met his future wife, Flora Rice. They were married Oct. 2, 1940, in Duluth, Minn. Daniel was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army in the European Theater of War. After the war, Daniel and Flora made their home in Milwaukee for 26 years. He worked for steel foundries in the Milwaukee area. Daniel retired to New Lisbon in 1974 with his family. Daniel enjoyed hunting, fishing and dancing. He is survived by his wife, Flora Spees of New Lisbon; daughters, Nancy Booth of Mauston and Renee (Beth Leighton) Dombrowski of Muskego; son, Mark (Jean Kelley) Spees of New Lisbon; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; brother, John (Tina) Spees of Rhinelander; and sister, Betty Hale of Lake Mills; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. Daniel was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Bette Jean Wesela; and brothers, George, Robert, James and Frank. A Celebration of Life was held on Friday, July 3, 2009, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Crandall Funeral Home in Mauston. Interment, at a later date, will be at the Brule Cemetery, Brule.
