KML rolls past Columbus

COLUMBUS — Kettle Moraine Lutheran's Jonathon Eastman knows how to make quick work of a short field.

The senior running back took advantage of good field position to score three first quarter touchdowns to lead the Chargers to a 35-6 nonconference victory over Columbus on Friday.

Eastman capped a 52-yard drive with a 10-yard TD run with less than three minutes gone in the game and then capped a 40-yard drive a little more than two minutes later to make it 14-0 Chargers with 6:36 still left in the first quarter.

He put the game out of reach with his third score that ended a 32-yard drive with 1:09 still remaining in the first.

"They're a very nice team, a very respectful team," Columbus coach Jason Brunell said of last year's state runners-up. "And field position was our Achilles' heel the whole first half."

And, eventually, so were turnovers.

The Chargers (2-0) took advantage of two second quarter interceptions to put up more scores.

Senior quarterback Taylor Koth found Greg Kriege for a 26-yard touchdown pass with 5:19 left in the first half on a drive set up by Philip Loescher's interception of a Bryant Baker pass. Koth made it 35-0 when he scrambled in from nine yards out with 1:56 left in the first half. That TD was set up by Sam Matthies' interception of a Baker pass.

With most of the Challenger starters relegated to the sidelines, Columbus (0-2) was finally able to gain some ground in the second half. The Cardinals got their only score late in the fourth quarter when Baker, a sophomore, found senior Zach Zander for a six-yard touchdown pass with 1:21 left in the game.

"We were able to put some things together in the second half," Brunell said, "and hopefully this is something we can build on for next week."

The Chargers' Eastman finished the night with 86 yards rushing on 16 carries - all coming in the first half. Columbus, on the other hand, gained only 36 yard rushing on 21 attempts.

Columbus will travel to Cambridge next Friday.
