Flyway football roundup: Mayville tops Campbellsport
By Citizen Staff
CAMPBELLSPORT — Shaking off a lackluster first half, Mayville scored two touchdowns in the third quarter of Friday's 14-6 nonconference victory over Campbellsport. "I thought we played a poor first half all-around," Mayville coach Tom Noennig said. "We challenged the kids to step it up and they did." Mayville took the lead early in the third quarter as a good kickoff return by Kevin Goard set up Mike Gionet's 18-yard touchdown pass to Scott Moyle. Later in the quarter, Moyle scored from 20 yards out to give the Cardinals (1-1) a lead they would not relinquish. Campbellsport put up 322 yards of offense on the Cardinals' defense but Mayville hung in and did not allow any scoring in the second half. "(Campbellsport quarterback) Chris Weiland is a tremendous QB," Noennig said. "We'd have him him down and then he'd convert a 3rd-and-20 on us. "Our gameplan was to keep him in check and I thought we did that for the most part except for a few big plays." Mayville hosts Wisconsin Dells next week.
