Little Ten football: Wisco wears down BD

Wisconsin Lutheran doesn't have to use a lot of trickery to beat most teams.

"Boy, they just come at you," Beaver Dam football coach Tim White said. "They have such a good (shoulder) pad level and they continue to pound on you."

The Vikings did just that to the Golden Beavers Friday night.

Wisconsin Lutheran rushed for 257 yards on 49 carries and eventually wore down BD's defense with a 30-7 victory in the Little Ten opener for both teams.

"Our defense got tired," BD coach Tim White said. "Their offense is such a machine and though out defense played outstanding, they just wore us down."

Unlike the previous two matchups with the Vikings BD (1-2, 0-1 LTC) hung in with the defending Division 3 state champions.

After an early stop on 4th down, the Golden Beavers marched down to the Wisco 9-yard line.

White wanted to get three points but the strategy failed as the Vikings (3-0, 1-0) blocked the field goal attempt.

"I felt like if we got an early lead, we could keep the momentum in our favor," White said.  "It just didn't work out."

Wisco made sure the Golden Beavers paid for their missed opportunity. Over the final 14 minutes, 31 seconds of the first half, the Vikings ran 26 plays compared to BD's nine.

The relentless pounding began to pay off for Wisco early in the second quarter as Frank Spath broke two tackles on his way to a 38-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

After a pair of quick possessions from BD, John Klein found Quentin Goins for a 12-yard touchdown with 2:23 left. A final three-and-out gave Wisco the ball at midfield with 1:16 remaining. The Vikings went 10 plays and eventually scored on a 7-yard run from Bryan Webb with six seconds left.

Though White wouldn't admit a bout with the flu earlier in the week affected his team's stamina, he did say the absences hurt in terms of preparation.

"I don't want to make (the illnesses) an excuse," White said. "But it did force us to backtrack with some guys and we had to play catch up."

BD held though through the third quarter and caught a break when an option pitch from Kline was fumbled and Mitch Aplin recovered inside the Vikings' 10. The Golden Beavers cashed in on the break as quarterback Ben Brooks scored from 1 yard out.

However, Wisco's defense pressured Brooks and Mitch Berg the entire night. Combined, the duo were just 6-of-19 passing for 41 yards.

"Wisco's defense has an ability to put a lot of pressure on you," White said. "They're very athletic and it's hard to find a weak spot.

"I think Mitch is getting better at seeing the reads and is gaining more confidence."

Though the Vikings added two late scores to increase the final margin of defeat, White hopes his team can learn from its play against one of the best teams in the state.

"The biggest challenge next week (against West Bend West) is to not have a letdown emotionally," White said. "We played a level emotionally that we hadn't been at before.

"We need to continue to play like that."
