LAKE MILLS — Despite a school record 240 receiving yards from Dan Hayes, the Columbus Cardinals were routed by Lakeside Lutheran, 58-20, in Friday's Northern Capitol opener.

Columbus (0-5, 0-1 North) was undone by 385 rushing yards and 21 first downs from the Warriors (3-2, 1-0).

"They just ran it right at us and we had a hard time stopping them," Columbus coach Jason Brunell said. "They converted fourth down and short at least six times on us."

Lakeside Lutheran jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead before Bryant Baker found Hayes for a 30-yard touchdown late in the first quarter.

The Warriors wasted little time in getting the score back as Nick Cooper broke three tackles at the line of scrimmage and raced 72 yards for a touchdown with 49 seconds remaining.

"That was a back-breaker," said Brunell of the Cooper touchdown. "We had him and he broke free.

"It hurt big-time."

Trailing 28-7, Baker hooked up with Hayes again, this time from 24 yards out to cut the deficit to 14.

The Warriors scored the next four times to increase their lead before Baker and Hayes connected one last time, this one for 77 yards.

Hayes finished with seven catches and broke the previous Columbus record held by Casey Davidson.

"Dan played excellent tonight," Brunell said. "His level of play has really picked up the last few weeks. He's developed into a real nice player."

Columbus hosts Lodi next Friday.
