EWC football: Waupun rallies at Falls
By Citizen Staff
SHEBOYGAN FALLS — Austin Armga's 4-yard touchdown run with 5 minutes, 20 seconds to play gave Waupun a 13-9 Eastern Wisconsin football win at Sheboygan Falls to keep the Warriors' playoff hopes alive. Waupun (2-4, 1-3 EWC) trailed 9-0 at halftime before rallying to snap a four-game losing streak. Armga also picked off two passes, including one in the final minute at his own 35 to seal the victory. "The last one was a heck of a pick because he was laying on the ground and the ball was tipped to him," Waupun coach Rick Applin said. "We had an oustanding defensive second half with seven three-and-outs. "We played fired-up like we hoped we would all year. We finally found it." Waupun had to erase a 9-0 halftime deficit but started early in the third quarter toward that end. Andrew Visser caught a crossing route in stride from Cory Nickel and split the secondary before racing 70 yards to the end zone. Applin cited Taylor Nehls and Josh McCullough with big efforts applying pressure from their outside linebacking spots, including a Nehls sack where he reached through a running back to finisht he play. Alec Brown, serving as a punt gunner, knocked a Falls blocker back into the Falcon punt returner and recovered at midfield to set up Armga's score five plays later. "We finally got something working for five plays," Applin said. Waupun (2-4, 1-3 EWC) visits Campbellsport, coached by former Warrior assistant Steve Austin, next week. Falls slipped to 3-3 and 1-3.
