Small Trailways roundup: Falcons endure scare

MADISON — Hustisford jumped out to a 21-0 lead and held on for dear life in Friday's 21-20 Small Trailways football win at Madison Abundant Life.

The Falcons forced an incomplete pass on a potential game-winning conversion attempt after the Challengers (2-4, 2-2 Small) scored with 2 minutes, 37 second to play. Austin Neu fumbled on the ensuing possession to give Abundant Life another chance but Dale Fenner's sack at his own 33 helped Hustisford survive.

Neu had a hand in all three touchdowns, starting with his 13-yard pass to Wade Falkenthal. Hustisford has scored on its first drive in every game this season.

"That's pretty darn good," Hustisford coach Dan Simon said. "All our guys battled. We're so beat up."

Neu took in a 3-yard run early in the second quarter and found Falkenthal, who finished with 11 catches for 187 yards, from 15 yards out. The Falcons were driving for another score late in the first half when a deflected pass was picked off and returned 70 yards for a score.

Neu fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Challengers closed to 21-14 by scoring with 36 seconds left in the half. Neu chased down a ball carrier and Falkenthal had an interception to help Hustisford preserve its lead.

"We were going in for the knockout blow and they got fired up," Simon said. "They felt like they could play with us.

"Austin and Wade just played phenomenal again for us."

Neu finished with 249 yards passing for the Falcons (4-2, 3-1), who host Fall River next week.

WILLIAMS BAY — Ben Syvertson had a massive night in Randolph's 53-12 Small Trailways football blowout at Williams Bay Friday night.

Syvertson rushed for a score, returned a kickoff and ran an interception back for touchdowns. He started the scoring with a 6-yard run and when Bay (0-6, 0-4 Small) responded with 13 seconds left in the first quarter, he returned the ensuing kickoff 76 yards to paydirt.

"Ben had an extremely nice game," Randolph coach Zach Kouba said. "The kickoff return was a big momentum changer.

"We're really a different team now. Our offensive line is blocking well and Kyle Kelm is leading the team in the right direction."

Kelm snuck in a 1-yard run and threw TD passes to Corey Pfeffer and Andrew Buss as part of Randolph's 34-point second quarter. A.J. Schick had two TD runs for the Rockets (3-3, 2-2), who host Green Lake next week.
