Churches broken into

Two Beaver Dam churches had an unhappy surprise on Sunday morning.

While preparing for Sunday services, staff at Cornerstone Church, 320 E. Burnett St., and Good Shepherd Ev. Lutheran Church, 1310 N. Center St., found that the buildings were broken into overnight.

According to the Beaver Dam Police Department's briefing, a window at Cornerstone was broken out and thieves took a 12 by 12 by 8 inch safe that was blue and purple in color. Staff at the church, who reported the crime at 8:20 a.m., also thought food may had been taken.

At 10:20 a.m., employees at Good Shepherd saw that a window was removed and entry was gained into the church. Nothing was missing but there were numerous signs of forced entry.

Beaver Dam Police Chief Dan Schubert said the one thing that can make churches safer is the addition of alarms.

"It's hard for churches with so many people having keys to get in and out of the churches, but I still recommend it," Schubert said.

As for the safe, Schubert said that the thieves came out empty handed.

"When they open the safe, there will not be any money in it," Schubert said.
