Small Trailways football: Neu slings for 7

HUSTISFORD — When Hustisford scheduled Homecoming for Friday night, it didn't mean gather in the end zone after every play.

Austin Neu and Chris Fauser made that interpretation on an evening where offense left defense helpless. Neu threw for a school-record seven touchdowns in the Falcons' 63-34 Small Trailways football win over Fall River.

"Austin throws a nice ball," Hustisford coach Dan Simon said. "Teams haven't stopped it yet so we'll keep throwing it.

"We have a big chance next week. We control our own destiny."

Controlling Fauser was another story, especially in the first half. The senior Pirate running back went through the Falcons like he had an I-Pass with 237 yards on 15 carries, four of which went for scores — by halftime.

"To Fauser's credit, I'm glad this is the last time I have to see him," Simon said. "He's a very talented back and I hope he plays somewhere next year."

Resistance was equally futile for the Pirates against Neu, who completed 14 of 19 passes for 203 yards. Two of those were dropped and could have been touchdowns.

Brock Becker caught three scores and Wade Falkenthal grabbed two TDs. Hustisford also rushed it 35 times for 263 yards to achieve some rare balance.

"We needed to run the ball," Simon said. "We made a few adjustments at halftime but we need to be ready at the start.

"Our defense has to keep us in the game. We can't give up back-to-back 63 yard runs."

It got to the point where Simon and Fall River coach Brian Zacho each opted for an onside kick before halftime, when the Falcons held a 34-28 lead.

Fall River turned it over twice in its first five plays of the second half and the Falcons quickly turned the miscues into 14 points to pull away. Hustisford (5-2, 4-1 Small) clinched a playoff spots and hopes to force a three-way tie atop the league with Green Lake next week.

The Pirates (1-6, 1-4) were eliminated from the playoffs. Fauser finished with 245 yards on 24 carries and completed three passes, two of which went for conversions.
