John E. Schmidt

BROWNSVILLE - John E. Schmidt, 86, of Brownsville, died Monday, June 29, 2009, at home.

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, at Mach Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 31 E. Division Street, Fond du Lac, and on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at Covenant United Methodist Church, 20 North Marr Street, Fond du Lac. His service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 3, at church with the Rev. Michael Morning officiating. Entombment will follow in Ledgeview Memorial Park.

Memorials may be directed to St. Agnes Hospice Hope.

He was born on March 7, 1923, in the town of Forest, the first of seven sons of John H. and Anna M. Mueller Schmidt.

John served with the U.S. Army from November 1945 until January 1947, as a clerk in the freight office.

On Nov. 5, 1947, he married Gladys I. Immel at St. Peter's Ev. Lutheran Church, Fond du Lac. John farmed together with his wife, Gladys, for most of his life, and was a seed corn dealer for many years.

He enjoyed traveling, gardening, and woodworking. John was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church.

He is survived by eight sisters-in-law, Nyleen Schmidt, Fond du Lac, Elfrieda Schmidt, Fond du Lac, Doris Bradtmueller, New Haven, Ind., Alice Daley, Fond du Lac, Ruth (Ken) Pluim, Waupun, Gloria Immel, Fond du Lac, Rita Immel, Mt. Calvary, and Donna Gesell, Fond du Lac; one brother-in-law, Charles Grabau, Fond du Lac; many nieces and nephews; together with special friends, Andy and Bonnie Schraufnagel and family.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Gladys on Feb. 13, 1999; six brothers, Robert, Chester, Elmer, Lyle, Leland, and Franklin.
