Rockets top W-C, to advance

For the third time this season, the New Lisbon Rockets and Wonewoc-Center Indians faced off. The Indians were looking to knock off the Rockets for the second time in New Lisbon with a match-up against the Cashton Eagles awaiting the winner. New Lisbon wouldn't be denied. Garrett Bunker started things off for the Rockets with a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the first to get the Rockets on the board. Mitchell Vinz drew a walk from Indians' pitcher Travis Kaus and was able to score from first off a hit by Chad Wyss to give New Lisbon a 2-0 advantage after one. Following a scoreless second inning, the New Lisbon offense went back to work. Jaime Gollmar started off the third with a walk. Following an out, Vinz singled and Wyss drove in Gollmar with a sacrifice fly. Vinz scored for the second time off an Elliott Bunker hit giving the Rockets a 4-0 lead. Wonewoc-Center was able to chip into the lead in the top of the fourth as Stewart Thompson was able to drive in a run to cut the lead to 4-1 after four. New Lisbon responded in the fifth, taking advantage of three walks and four hits in the bottom of the fifth to score three runs and increase their lead to 7-1. The Indians scored in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 7-2. New Lisbon was able to pick up a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Garrett Bunker started off the inning with a single, Vinz doubled, and Bunker scored on a Wyss sacrifice fly. Elliott Bunker picked up another RBI as Vinz scored for the third time to put New Lisbon up 9-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning. Wonewoc-Center was looking to rally in the top of the seventh. Tom Schwichtenberg got things going with a one-out double, but the Indians couldn't capitalize and fell 9-2. "This is our fifth game in a row with over 10 hits," New Lisbon coach Steve Anderson said. "We are starting to hit really well and Chad (Wyss) pitched a really solid game for us today." New Lisbon was led by Wyss who finished with three RBIs while striking out 14 and giving up just three hits. Vinz finished 2 for 3 on the day for New Lisbon scoring three runs. Garrett Bunker finished 2 for 4 with a solo home run for the Rockets. Schwichtenberg's double led the Indians offense. New Lisbon traveled to Cashton on Tuesday, to take on the Eagles. The teams split their regular season match-ups. The winner will play the winner of the Weston and Royall match-up today. Results of Tuesday's game were too late for this issue.
