Lake Delton man faces choking charge
By Andy Steinke, Dells Events
A Lake Delton man faces felony and misdemeanor charges for allegedly hitting and trying to strangle his girlfriend.
Trent Nelson, 39, was arrested for felony strangulation and suffocation and misdemeanor disorderly conduct and non-aggravated assault, according to a police report. Lake Delton officers were called to the Sunset Boulvard home early Sunday morning.
Nelson and his girlfriend went drinking in Wisconsin Dells and Lake Delton Saturday night. They were kicked out of Nig’s because Nelson started two fights, his girlfriend told police, and they continued to argue when they had a drink in Lake Delton.
They returned home after arguing in Nelson’s truck, and continued the argument at home in front of the woman’s mother, who was baby-sitting their 4-year-old daughter.
Nelson told both women to leave, and his girlfriend’s mother stepped outside.
Nelson’s girlfriend said Nelson then punched her in the left temple. He then grabbed her throat for about a minute and pushed her head into the refrigerator and the wall, she told police.
While she was clawing at him to let her go, the woman said Nelson grabbed her left hand and squeezed. She told an officer that she thought he was breaking her fingers.
The woman’s mother then came inside after she heard the noise and told Nelson to let go of her daughter. She pinched Nelson’s hand and dug into it with her keys to make Nelson let her daughter go.
After letting go, Nelson called police.
He told Officer Kristi Seidl that their daughter was woke by the screaming, and he wanted his girlfriend and her mother out of the house.
Nelson said his girlfriend was accusing him of cheating on her, yelling and swearing at him. He said she clawed at him and slapped his face, so he took her by her shoulders to move her away. He said he did not hit her, punch her or push her.
Officers decided Nelson was the predominant aggressor, and that the scratches on his neck and arms could be defensive wounds.
He was taken to the Sauk County jail. A pre-trial conference has been set for June 29.
