Children on the northeast side of the City of Wisconsin Dells will retain their sledding hill, the Parks, Recreation and Waterway Committee decided.

Prior to the committee meeting, Committee Chair, Alderperson Debbie Kinder, talked with Tammy Kaszinski about the sledding hill at Rotary Park that has been used by generations of children in the neighborhood. However, with the upgrade of the ball fields at the park, the scoreboard and a fence was erected where the sledders came down the hill.

A berm was put in but as the sleds came down the hill they flew up and over the hill spilling the rider or risking running into the scoreboard poles or the fence.

At the committee meeting, Kinder asked permission to enlarge the embankment and bring out the sled run parallel to the parking lot so the children would not hit the batting cage, scoreboard or fence.

The committee agreed, but the first step should be to contact the Easter Seals Society, since the land is owned by Easter Seals’ Camp Wawbeek, said John Van Wie, who also chairs the Wisconsin Easter Seals Board. "I don’t see any opposition," he said, but it is a different use of the property and the chapter should be aware of the use. He said he would be meeting with the board shortly and would bring it before the Easter Seals board.

The committee Oct. 21 also heard from MSA Engineer John Langhans, who is supervising the work on the city’s boat ramp off River Road.

Langhans said the contractor, Janke General Contractors, had started work with installation of sheet piling to hold the water back so that concrete ramps could be poured. The piling could not be installed because of rock where it was to be put.

Instead of piling and pouring the ramps, Langhans said the decision was made to put in precast ramps. While using them was not in the original concept, Langhans said, the work would still be an improvement. It will also increase costs by $21,000 and delay completion by two weeks.

The committee agreed with the changes.
