The Wisconsin Dells High School varsity baseball team is in the middle of one of those seasons where every opposition hit and every Chiefs' error comes back and bites them hard.

Monday, the squad saw life on the other side and pulled out its first win of the season, and it couldn't have come at a better time, giving the Chiefs a 6-0 shutout win against probably its biggest rival, the Adams-Friendship Green Devils.

Senior Dillon Hess played a huge role in the win, allowing just a pair of Adams-Friendship hits and two walks in the shutout win. Two of those base runners were later picked off at first by the crafty southpaw.

Behind Hess, the Chiefs played an error-free contest and offensively, they made the Devils pay in a big way for the two miscues it made.

"He was pretty dominant," summed up head coach Mike Michalsky of Hess' effort. "In fact, it was one of the most dominant games we've ever seen."

For the most part, the win comes as the result of an inexperienced team gaining experience. Michalsky did make a few changes to the batting order though and they worked out extremely well.

Matt Snyder and Alex Yacko are now 1-2 in the batting order, senior Jordan Holverson sliding down to sixth. The move appears to have a double impact. As more selective hitters, Snyder and Yacko force the pitchers to make nice pitches early in the game and draw walks.

Holverson, more aggressive, gives the team a nice presence in the middle of the order, following Jake Williams and Matt Lagoda and preceding Jalen Buss and Taylor Jane. All of them played a role in the win on Monday.

Adams picked up the first hit of the game, but the base runner was promptly picked off by Hess and first baseman Buss. Inspired by the play on defense, the Chiefs went to work on the offense in the third, Alex Yacko getting aboard with a walk and Williams cranking a two-run homer for all of the runs the Chiefs would need.

In the fourth, Holverson led off with a double, moved to third as Hess helped his own cause with a perfect sacrifice, then scored when Jayne reached on an error.

Jayne promptly stole second and scored on a base hit by Buss.

The other two runs came in the sixth inning, started out by a walk to Jayne. Buss followed, reaching on the other Devils' error and Jayne moved to third on the play. A ground out by Snyder scored Jayne and Yacko followed with a walk. Williams drove in his third run on the contest with a single, the inning's only hit.

The Chiefs received the luxury of a few days to practice Tuesday and today, but they wrap up the season with 11 games on the final 10 days, beginning with a return contest at Adams-Friendship Friday.

On Saturday, the Chiefs play host to its own tournament, meeting Elkhorn in the opener. New Lisbon and Kenosha Bradford square off in the other first round game with the two losers playing next, followed by the championship game.

The win boosts the Chiefs to 1-8 on the season, 1-4 in South Central Conference play.
