never really came to pass as the Wisconsin Dells varsity volleyball team closed in on the first half of its South Central Conference season.

The Chiefs played 15 matches prior to making the trip to Wautoma, most of them coming in tournament tests. And, while the team certainly didn't want to look past any opponent, this one was clearly highlighted on their respective schedules.

But for the most part, the Chiefs brushed the defending conference champs aside in a 25-16, 25-15, 25-19 sweep that saw them take control of this season's conference championship race.

That win, coupled with a varsity-junior varsity-freshman 9-0 sweep for the Chiefs against visiting Adams-Friendship Green Devils two nights earlier, boosted the Chiefs overall record to 14-2 and more importantly, their conference mark to 4-0.

The Chiefs have yet to surrender a game in conference play this season, let alone a match, but they still have to face the Mauston Golden Eagles in Mauston Tuesday before wrapping up the first half of the schedule.

In between, the Chiefs planned to get a few more tough matches under their belt at the Baraboo Invitational tournament scheduled for today.

So far, the Chiefs dropped a tough two-game set to Waunakee at the Horicon Invitational (held at JustaGame) and a close match to Cambria-Friesland at the Fall River Invitational for their only defeats this season.

They have been relatively untested in Conference play.

Against the Green Devils on Tuesday, a match that started early due to quick sweeps by both the Chiefs freshman and junior varsity sides, the Chiefs matched their younger mates with a 25-10, 25-17, 25-11 sweep.

After a quick sideout, Tess Myklebust went to the service line in the opening game and by the time Adams served again, the Chiefs owned an 11-1 lead.

The Green Devils' first point off of their own serve came from Kathryn Griffin, the final server in their rotation, making the score 18-6.
