The Wisconsin Dells High School varsity volleyball team shifted from tournament mode back to its primary quest for the 2008 season, boosting its conference winning streak to six matches this past week.

The Chiefs wrapped up a perfect first half with a 3-0 sweep in Mauston Tuesday night, then played its return match with Westfield Thursday night in Westfield earning another sweep.

A 25-9, 25-17, 25-12 sweep in Mauston Tuesday delivered the Chiefs to the halfway mark with not only a 5-0 match record, but a spotless 15-0 games record as well. Not much changed two nights later as the squad began the second half with a 25-15, 25-12, 25-17 sweep of the host Pioneers.

Overall, the Chiefs' squad is 20-3 on the season, two of its three match defeats coming in matches that decided tournament championships and the other in a semi-final match.

Basically, the Chiefs have been unchallenged the first time through the conference and while they are clearly the conference favorites, they are not about to overlook anybody either.

Head coach Cyndy Collins said the team is preparing for each opponent based on their previous meeting.

"We just look at, what did we do, what can we correct. We didn't play any matches flawless. There's room for improvement.

Collins said she was a little nervous before last weekend's Baraboo tournament, not because of some tough competition, but because it gave the Mauston squad a chance to preview them before the conference match.

However, her side brushed aside the Golden Eagles in Baraboo and not much changed when they went to Mauston three days later.

Skye Solava has enjoyed some big matches this season, but none bigger than Tuesday night in Mauston as she and Kinsey Mace proved a lethal combination.

Solava hammered 11 spikes straight to the floor and while Collins said a lot of them came as the result of mistakes on Mauston's part, in terms of weak balls put over the net, some were set up by Mace and there was no let up on defense as Solava picked up four more kills via the block and also picked up a dig, rare for a front row specialist.

Mace also enjoyed a big night offensively with a team leading 10 assists and also led the squad on defense with five digs. Mace also collected the team's only two service aces of the night.

For Solava, Collins said it is part of a big week for her middle hitter who also enjoyed a strong day at the Baraboo tournament and played well in matches the previous week as well.

At the service line, Mace collected enough for a win by herself, racking up 27 points, including a pair of aces and she finished the night with a perfect 29 of 29 service mark. Tess Myklebust added another 11 service points and was also perfect on 13 serves. The team itself missed just two of 74 service chances.

Another big front row hitter, Markee Schultz, took her turn as team leader Thursday, coming up with nine spike kills and one on a block, Solava contributing a half dozen spike kills, a pair of second game tip kills and three blocks.

Mace Picked up another 13 assists

The service points against Westfield were spread out pretty good, Myklebust stepping up as the leader with 14, including a half dozen aces and Myklebust never missed a serve all night. Ashlee Platt added another nine service points and a pair of aces while Katie Piekarski and Kristin Oines both picked up six points on serve.

The Chiefs get a chance to work mainly in practice this week with just one match, against a young Nekoosa team on Tuesday night. The following week, the Chiefs travel to Adams, then play host to Wautoma Hornets for a match that likely will decide the conference championship.

The team's annual trek to a La Crosse Invitational and the return match with Mauston will wrap up the regular season, Regionals scheduled to start Oct. 21.
