Tennis Chiefs wrap up in Lodi
Wisconsin Dells High School varsity tennis number 3 singles player, Jessica Luer (shown above in a match earlier this season, dropped a 5-7, 1-6 decision to a Columbus opponent in her lone match at the WIAA Division 2 Sub-Sectionals held at Lodi Monday.
The season came to an abrupt end for the Wisconsin Dells High school varsity tennis team at Lodi Monday. Despite grabbing some wins, the senior-heavy team was unfortunately unable to qualify any team members out of the WIAA Division 2 Sub-Sectionals and into Sectionals scheduled to start today. All three doubles teams and number four singles Abbi Delmore earned a split on the day, but needed to get past the second match to move on to Sectionals. The top three singles players were defeated in their respective opening matches. The number one doubles team of Jordan Bork and Amber Byrne, both seniors, began the event with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win against Jade Fema and Tara Marko of Viroqua, but run into a tough squad in Amber Krause and Kaina Luthra from Watertown Luther Prep in the second round, falling 2-6, 1-6. The number two doubles team including senior Tetyana Hladun and sophomore Mykala McDonald also started out the day with a win, 6-1, 6-1 against Amanda Iverson and Rachel Schneider of Viroqua, but Lyda Free and Allie Leyrer, another Watertown Luther Prep squad, ended their run in the second round 6-0, 6-0. Juniors Erika McCabe and Maria Peterson began with an impressive 6-3, 6-0 win against Jackie Barron and Kayla Ruplinger of the Wayland Academy in the opening round, but then ran into Morgan Werch and Alyssa Wittchow of Ripon in the second and were stopped 6-1, 6-0. In singles play, Delmore, a junior was the lone first round winner, moving past Amanda Tramm of the Wayland Academy 6-4, 6-1. In the second round though, Delmore was stopped by Mary Beth Mabis of Lodi 6-0, 6-4. Number 1 Singles player, senior Karista Krueger was defeated by Samantha Knox of Watertown 6-0, 6-0, Number two senior Christina Gehrke falling to Kelsey Murray of Mauston 6-4, 6-3. Number three singles saw senior Jessica Luer defeated by Claire O'Donnell of Columbus 7-5, 6-1.
