All things considered, the Wisconsin Dells High School varsity girls golf team got its season off to an awesome start at Trappers Turn Thursday.

Two of its returnees – sophomores Tama Estebo and Sam Mueller set the bar high for themselves right off the bat in the first 18-holes of the 36-hole two-day Dells Invite which started at Trappers Turn.

Estebo fired a round of 123, just one stroke off of her personal best while Mueller entered the campaign with a round of 125, a full 13 strokes better than her best score from the previous season.

Freshman Dana Marshall rounded out the team, beginning her high school run with a round of 152.

Meanwhile, sophomore Marlie Schultz and Emily Upson represented the team in the junior varsity competition, cut short a little due to time constraints on the course.

Teams were split into divisions based on school population, most of the local schools competing in Division 2.

Topping the list in that group was Osseo Fairchild with a round of 376 while M. Young of Osseo and Lancaster’s Shannon Farrey topped the individual score list with matching 87’s.

All four of the Chiefs’ Badger North competitors were included in the tournament. As expected, Waunakee, playing in Division 1, was the class of the group, finishing with a team score of 347, second to only Oregon 10 strokes better.

Individually in Division 1, Madison Lafollette’s McKenna Prestigacomo and Caitlyn Dubester of Waunakee were even with rounds of six over par, 78.

The other three Badger North teams were all in Division 2, Portage topping the list with a team score of 392, two spots and 60 strokes better than Mount Horeb while Reedsburg was seventh overall with a score of 471, just one stroke away from sixth place Little Chute.

The Chiefs and St. Claire Regis both played in Division 2, but didn’t have enough teams to officially record team scores.

A few of the teams participated only in the event’s first day which acted as a lead in for the ‘Golf For a Song Tournament.’

While the Invitational effectively opened the sports season for the school, the second event is one of the year’s biggest school fundraisers...certainly the biggest for the high school band.

After Friday’s round, the Chiefs got the weekend off but were right back into the competition with tournaments at Stoughton (Monday) and Oregon (Wednesday) next week.
