Big week for Lady Chiefs
By Jim den Hollander
With just three games remaining on the South Central Conference schedule, the Wisconsin Dells High School varsity volleyball team once again finds itself in control of its own fate. After some busy weeks, the Chiefs made just one trip over the Homecoming Week, to Nekoosa on Tuesday night where they grabbed a 25-14, 25-15, 23-25, 25-16 match win. With the win, the Chiefs boosted its overall match record to 11-4 and its game record is 44-17. More importantly though, the Chiefs remain the lone one-loss team in the conference, sitting at 6-1 on the year. The Chiefs have only one home match left on its schedule and that comes Tuesday when the team hosts the 4-3 Adams-Friendship Green Devils. A win there boosts the Chiefs to no worse than second place on the season and sets up a huge rematch in Wautoma on Thursday. The Hornets upset the locals back on Sept. 17 with a four game match win. However, the Hornets lost a previous match to Adams-Friendship and have since surrendered a second half decision to Nekoosa, leaving them one game back of the Chiefs. The match on
Thursday night should decide if the South Central Conference will have solo or duel champions, although there will still be another match for both teams the following Tuesday night. While the Chiefs play host to Adams-Friendship in their annual Seniors Night Match, Wautoma is hosting Mauston. Both teams end the conference season on the road, the Chiefs in Mauston while Wautoma makes its shortest trip, to Westfield. In Nekoosa, the Chiefs dominated the first two matches before the homeside fought back to make the match a little more interesting. Junior Heather Conroy led the team in a couple of defensive statistics and Tricia Gussel enjoyed her best statistical night of the season at the setter spot. Tuesday’s match will likely start at about 7 p.m. following junior varsity and freshman matches, which start at 5:30 p.m.
