Running into history

It’s a big deal, but in the end it came as no surprise.

All the Wisconsin Dells High School varsity cross country teams did on Saturday at the South Central Conference Championship meet in Mauston was make their amazing season official.

The varsity girls were a shoo-in to take its first ever conference championship, ending more than a decade of Mauston control and they did just that placing all seven runners in the top half of the field and all five point counters on one of the two all-Conference teams.

The boys team meanwhile made a huge jump from fifth a year previous to runners up in 2009 and tripling their all-Conference input.

Conference champs

As they have done in almost every race they entered this season, senior Taylor Hickey and junior Stacey Swatek paced the field in the four kilometer varsity girls event, charging out of their right hand gate across a 100-meter field, to get the ‘hole shot’ when the field narrowed and never looking back.

Despite a glitch that saw the pair briefly going the wrong way around a flag, they quickly adjusting on a course that was extremely fan friendly in the sense runners were visible nearly 100 percent of the time, but seemed difficult to follow with a number of times around different loops.

Hickey, who already owned the course record, having set it at a Quadrangular meet earlier this season, topped the field with a time of 16 minutes, 22 seconds. Swatek grabbed the conference runners up spot in 16:56

Senior Jessica Sweet ran the race of her life – so far – crossing the line fourth overall and flirting with a third place finish for much of the race before surrendering the spot with a fight later and settling for fourth in 17:33.

She was clearly happy with her finish and head coach Dean Knetter who was pretty much bang on with a pre-race prediction a week ago, was pleasantly surprised to see her running way up the field as well.

"I was a little surprised on Jessica Sweet who normally runs fifth (in the Dells group) for us. She ran third," said Knetter afterward. "She finished fourth in the race, which was a surprise, but three-four-five were right where I thought they would be and you know, one-two haven’t lost a step.

"I thought we were a little rusty with a week off, you know. Times were off a bit, but there were a lot of corners, lot of turns, which slow times down."

For Sweet, she finished well in front of her quad pace and enjoyed an awesome race.

"It was at least a minute faster than my Quad time," said Sweet afterward. "I felt a lot faster, a lot stronger than I did previously."

For much of the race, it appeared the Chiefs were on their way to a 1-2-3 finish. Emily Girdauskas of Wautoma slipped by Sweet late in the race, but it didn’t change an awesome run.

"At the end, I was kind of tired. When the Wautoma girl passed me, I was really mad she passed me. I tried to get her again and I just couldn’t do it," said Sweet with a chuckle.

Sweet said she thinks she and the rest of the Dells runners did not peak and will bring back something special for the Sectionals when the team will be in the hunt to qualify for one of only two spots available at the state championship meet.

"We’re hoping this year we’ll push through," said Sweet.

The Chiefs wrapped up

an amazing 27-point first place finish with Theresa Madland finishing ninth in 18:15 and Kiersten Norgard 11th just two seconds later.

Tesa Barney passed four in the final 400 meters of the race for a 20th place showing in 19:19 and Abby Vanden Langenberg wrapped up a sub-20-minute showing for the entire team, crossing the line 28th in 19:48.

Runners up

While junior Max Mattei led the way for the varsity boys team as he has all season long, it was a great finish for the team’s senior runners as well.

Mattei ran as high as second spot in the race, but ultimately fell back behind the five Nekoosa runners, crossing the line sixth.

That helped Nekoosa, the top ranked team in the state, fulfill its pre-race goal, which is a true compliment to Mattei.

"I just met with the Nekoosa coach and he said their goal was to beat Max," said coach Knetter adding the Nekoosa team felt that the Dells junior was the one obstacle standing between them and a perfect score.

Mattei didn’t realize that at the time, but certainly realized that to be noticed by a team like the Papermakers is a compliment to him.

"I was kind of surprised," said Mattei later. "Their whole town knew my name, they were cheering their runners saying, ‘Come on, Max is right behind you,’ and it’s just crazy."

On the flip side, Mattei knows that if he is close to that Nekoosa pack, he is doing just fine.

"Yeah, they are the goal, said Mattei after his result. "They’re perfect, and if I stay up with them, I should have a pretty good shot (at qualifying for state at Saturday’s Sectional meet).

"I’m planning on beating some of them at Sectionals - that’s what I’ve got to do."

A studious runner who watches newspaper and Internet results as much as he trains, Mattei has done the research on just who will be at the Gale Ettrick Trempeleau-hosted meet on Saturday. The top two teams qualify for state along with the top two individual runners that are not a part of those teams. He likes his chances.

"I’m somewhat confident. I’ve done the research and a lot of things point to me going to state," said Mattei, "but there are a lot of other things that say, you know, you might not be going. It’s complicated and I am really not sure."

In other words, Mattei, enjoying a second consecutive breakout season with the team, needs his best effort of the season Saturday for the season to continue one final week.

Happy ending

While the season is not over for Dakota Grimsled, the conference portion ended in a much happier fashion.

A year ago at Adams-Friendship, Grimsled not only finished a heartbreaking 15th in the boys event (top 14 make all-Conference teams, it was by a step or two in a sprint to the finish that put him in the position.

Certainly getting onto one of those all-Conference teams was a primary goal this time around and when he crossed the line in 13th spot, the Dells senior achieved a long term goal.

Another senior, Jared Funmaker who endured a slow start due to, of all things, overtraining during the summer months, made the second half count, running a great race and capping it off with a sprint into ninth place over the final 100 meters.

Rounding out the boys team showing was junior Billy Leonard 19th in 19:46 and freshman Jacob Synott just two spots and 13 seconds behind while junior David Biffert was 24th in 20:12. All three will no doubt be in the all-Conference hunt a year from now.

In junior varsity results, freshman Hallie Hackl-Frank came through the pack to a runner up showing in 20:13 and fellow freshman Sam Borck was running a solid race when unfortunately, an injury ended her day

The junior varsity boys were also runners up as a team, led by Dakota Hammerly who finished second in 20:41.

Other Dells runners in the race included Chad Marthaler, wrapping up a solid four year stint with the team and: Joe Trojan, Bob Griep, Tony Mueller, Alex Whiteside, Dakotah Hammerly and Max Hocker.

Unfortunately, junior varsity results from the meet were incomplete at press time.
