The Wisconsin Dells boys golf team closed out the regular season strong as the Chiefs posted a second-place finish in Tuesday’s South Central Conference meet at SentryWorld Golf Course in Stevens Point.
The Chiefs fired a 390 as a team to tie with Adams-Friendship, finishing 25 strokes behind Nekoosa (365), who won the SCC title with 45 points, while Papermakers senior Caden Gerzmehle earned medalist honors with an 8-over-par 80.
With its second place finish, Wisconsin Dells finished in second in the overall standings with 36 points, finishing 8.5 ahead of Adams-Friendship.
Leading the way for the Chiefs was the duo of senior Will Post and sophomore Riley Eck. The pair, which earned First Team All-SCC honors, were again tight, shooting an 89 and a 91. Post started his round off with a 44, thanks in part to a triple bogey on the par-5 ninth, but was steady over the back half with a 45.
Eck similarly struggled on the final hole of the front half, shooting a four-over-par 9 to finish with a 48, but rallied and shaved off five strokes on the back half to shoot a 43. Behind the Chiefs leading duo, senior Shamus Meyers finished under 100 with a 99.
Meyers stumbled out of the gates with a 54 on the front nine but rebounded with a 45 on the final nine holes. Rounding out the Chiefs varsity five was sophomore Ethan Luther, who shot a 111, and junior Daniel Nate who shot a 120.
Wisconsin Dells set itself up for its second-place overall finish by tying for first in Monday’s Adams-Friendship mini-meet. The Chiefs, along with the Papermakers and Green Devils, shot a 199 as a team at Northern Bay Castle Course.
Post led the way for the Chiefs, firing a 9-over-par 45 to earn medalist honors. Eck was again close behind, finishing within two strokes with an 11-over-par 47. Luther fired a 53 for the Chiefs, while Nate shot a 54 and Meyers had a 58.
Wisconsin Dells will look to stay in good form next Tuesday when the Chiefs travel to Prairie du Chien for a Division 2 regional meet.
