The Wisconsin Dells rec basketball league found a new dancing partner this year.

The park and rec league merged this year with the Baraboo rec league.

“Last year was the first year we didn’t have an actual city league basketball,” said Dells Park and Rec Director Thad Meister. “It had gradually been tapering off; as we’ve seen in the industry.”

To help get the league back to a healthy number of players, Meister reached out to neighboring communities to see if they’d like to join forces. He also reached out to Portage and Reedsburg, with Portage saying they might join the league next year. Reedsburg has been more hesitant to participate.

So far, Meister is pleased is pleased with the results.

“It just worked out super nice with ten teams – five Dells, five Baraboo,” he said.

He said the city would have run this year with five teams, but thought it was much better to have 10.

The travel is minimal, with the Dells teams traveling to Baraboo only two or three teams over the course of the season, and the same for Baraboo members traveling to the Dells.

“We’re just a hop, skip and a jump away from each other,” Meister said. “It helped revitalize the whole basketball league.”

The league takes place at the respective high school in each city Wednesday nights. The league is open to anyone at least 18 years old and out of high school.
