Backhaus and Vandenlangenberg

Wisconsin Dells senior Maia Backhaus, center, and teammate Emma Vandenlangenberg, right, compete in the girls 100 meter hurdles at the South Central Conference Meet in Mauston on Tuesday.

In what turned out to be a three-team race for the conference championship, the Wisconsin Dells girls came up three points short of host Mauston, as the Golden Eagles edged out the Chiefs 139-136 at the South Central Conference Meet on Tuesday.

The second place for the lady Chiefs ended their hopes of winning a third straight conference championship.

The Wisconsin Dells girls were led by senior Jenna Mace, who finished with a pair of victories to go along with a pair of runner-up finishes. Mace won the 100 meter dash in 13.03 seconds while also taking first in the 400 meters in 1:01.23.

Mace had to settle for second place in the 200 meters, but her time 26.32 seconds did set a school record, breaking the mark originally set by Heather Conroy. Mace’s other runner-up finish came in the long jump, where she finished with distance of 16 feet, 3.75 inches.

Sophomore Lindsay Cunningham pulled in some major points for Wisconsin Dells, who finished just one point in front of third-place Wautoma on Tuesday. Cunningham finished the meet with three second-place finishes. Cunningham was the runner-up in the 800 meters (2:30.23), the 1,600 meters (5:39.79) and the 3,200 meters (14:56.73).

Wisconsin Dells freshman Megan Jones had a pair of top-three finishes in her first conference meet. Jones finished third in the 400 meters in 1:03.26 and was third in the 800 meters in 2:36.34.

Junior Caelan Tourdot led the Wisconsin Dells throwers with a second place in the shot put, where her best throw went 33 feet, 11.50 inches. Junior Zoe Fess led the Chiefs in the discus, finishing third with a throw of 91 feet, 5 inches.

Other top finishes for the Wisconsin Dells girls came from Jamie Pfeifer with a third in the 3,200 meters (17:29.43), Maia Backhaus with a third in the 100 meter hurdles (17.97) and Caroline Pakos with a third in the high jump (4-07).

The Wisconsin Dells boys finished in fourth place with 62 points at Tuesday’s conference meet, while Nekoosa ran away with the title, piling up 172 points, good enough to win by 33 points over runner-up Wautoma.

The Wisconsin Dells boys won two events on Tuesday, including Nick Kruschke in the pole vault and Cade Ravenscroft in the high jump. Kruschke cleared a season-best 12 feet, 6 inches to win the pole vault. Ravenscroft cleared 5 feet, 8 inches to take first in the high jump.

Ravenscroft also bagged a pair of fifth-place finishes on Tuesday. The sophomore was fifth in the long jump (18-03.50) and was fifth in the triple jump (39-04.50).

Ravenscroft also teamed up with John Pikula, Angga Marquardt and Brett Hirst to take second in the 400-meter relay in 46.33 seconds.

Wisconsin Dells sophomore Pablito Schulz had a strong meet in the distance events for the Chiefs, finishing third in the 1,600 meters (4:56.98) and third in the 3,200 meters (10:52.11). Other top finishes for the Wisconsin Dells boys included a fourth place from Kody Funmaker in the discus (118-00) and a fourth from Jacob Hunkins in the high jump (5-05).

Next up for Wisconsin Dells will be Monday’s Division 2 Viroqua Regional, where the top four finishers in each event will advance to next Thursday’s Division 2 Lancaster Sectional.
