With its last game over two weeks ago, it would not have been surprising for the Badger Lightning co-op girls hockey to show some signs of rust.
The rust was minimal but the result was the same as the Lightning fell to Black River Falls, 3-2, in a non-conference game on Feb. 1 at Milt Lunda Memorial Arena in Black River Falls. Lizzie Patton and Elle Goethel each scored for the Lightning, who as unable to cage the Tigers.
Badger took an1-0 lead just before the end of the first period on Patton’s goal with 16 minutes, 39 seconds played. After Black River Falls knotted things at 1 early in the second, Goethel re-established the Lightning’s lead at 10:52 in the second on an assist from Kaylee Engal.
The Tigers wouldn’t be tamed however, as Black River Falls scored two goals down the stretch in the stretch of the third period to complete the comeback. Things could have been much worse for the Lightning if not for goalie Natalie Buss, who made 42 saves in the losing effort.

Viroqua 3, Badger Lightning 1
Following the loss to the Tigers, the Lightning was unable to make its own comeback in a 3-1 loss to Viroqua in Badger Conference action on Tuesday at Poppy Waterman Ice Arena in Lake Delton.
A two-goal first period from the Blackhawks proved to be too much to overcome for the Lightning (0-10-0 Badger, 1-14-0). Viroqua stretched its lead to 3-0 in the third before Engal pulled the Lightning within 3-1 with 15:30 played, but Badger was unable to get closer.
