The Baraboo girls golf team couldn’t get through a tough WIAA Division 1 regional on Wednesday.

The Thunderbirds finished with a team score of 430 to place eighth out of eight teams at the Middleton regional at Pleasant View Golf Course. Middleton shot a 350 to win the regional title, while Madison West (350), Verona (354) and Waunakee (370) also advanced to the Verona sectional at Edelweiss Country Club in New Glarus on Oct. 4.

“We knew it was going to be really competitive,” Baraboo coach Landon Brownell said on Wednesday night. “Our goal going in was to play the best we can and try to have our best individual round. ... We just didn’t have as much as some of the teams in this regional.”

The T-Birds also won’t be sending any individuals to sectionals, as the individual qualifying positions went to Madison Memorial’s Bridget McCarthy (90), Portage’s Anna Davidson (92), Reedsburg’s Caylee Beyer (94) and Portage’s Sophie Denure (94).

Baraboo’s Carly Moon finished five shots back of qualifying. The sophomore shot a 53 on the front 9 before closing with a back-9 46 to finish with a 99 on the par-72 course.

“She wasn’t very happy with her round,” Brownell said of Moon. “But I told her after the round, she can’t base her whole season on that. She had a very good year, being first-team all-conference. Carly obviously has the potential, she just had a bit of an off day. ... A lot of coaches this year were telling me that she could be pretty good.”

Baraboo’s quartet of seniors finished off their high school golf careers. Hailey Philipp checked in with a 108, while Elise Lewison shot a 111, Halle Hickey shot a 112 and Sidney Seymour shot a 123.

Philipp and Hickey each put together season-best rounds on Wednesday, finishing their senior year on a high note.

“They were having fun,” Brownell said of what led to the low rounds. “They knew it was potentially their last round since they’re seniors. They had fun... It was nice weather... Sometimes that’s when you do your best.”

Beyer’s 94 led Reedsburg to a seventh-place finish, while Anna Krieski added a 102, Kaitlyn Brunken shot a 111, Taylor Fearing shot a 118 and Ashley Krieski shot a 131.

The regional capped off a solid year for the T-Birds, just the second season in program history and their first season counting toward the Badger North Conference standings. Baraboo finished 3-3 in Badger North duals, including recording their first-ever conference win with a 231-237 victory over Reedsburg on Aug. 10.

“We had a successful season as a team, the girls improved throughout the year,” Brownell said. “It was enjoyable, especially the second half of the season when we had more time to learn about the game.”

The T-Birds will have some work to do in the offseason, as they’ll need to replace Hickey, Lewison, Philipp and Seymour. Moon will be back for her junior season, as will Adele Griffin and Caitlin Hause. Brownell hopes to get a few more golfers in the program next season.

“We’ll have to do some recruiting to replace the four seniors,” Brownell said. “Hopefully we can build it up a bit and have some more competition.”
