The Baraboo prep  boys swimming team took third at the Small School State Meet on Saturday at Shorewood High School.

The Baraboo prep boys swim team got a taste of what the WIAA state meet might be like on Saturday.

The Thunderbirds passed the test, placing third out of 17 teams at the Small School State Invitational at Shorewood High School.

Baraboo scored 223 points, only losing to Madison Edgewood (345) and Monona Grove (246) — the top two teams at the 2018 WIAA Division 2 state meet.

Monona Grove won its fourth straight Division 2 state title last year, while Edgewood took second and Baraboo finished seventh. The teams will all be in the same pool again when Baraboo hosts a Division 2 sectional meet on Feb. 9 at Jack Young Middle School.

Aidan Lohr won Baraboo’s only title on Saturday in Shorewood. The junior touched the wall in 52.50 seconds to claim the 100-yard backstroke over Edgewood’s Alex Moen (:53.17) and Colin Senke (:55.64).

Lohr added a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley, using a time of 1:57.49 to take second behind Madison Edgewood’s Truman teDuits (1:56.96).

Jacob Laux had Baraboo’s other second-place finish on Saturday. The sophomore took second in the 100 butterfly (:55.34), trailing only Berlin/Green Lake’s Sam Ryf (:53.09). Laux also finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.48).

The T-Birds’ other top-three finish came in the first swimming event of the day. The Baraboo quartet of Lohr, Laux, Mitchell Hamm and Ethan Klingenmeyer placed third in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:44.00. Edgewood (1:40.46) and Monona Grove (1:41.28) placed first and second.

Josh Hackbarth, Jakob Lemke, Hamm and Lohr teamed up to take fourth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:29.82), while Laux, Lemke, Klingenmeyer and Hackbarth placed eighth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.77).

Hackbarth, a senior, also took fifth in the 100 freestyle (:51.61) and sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:54.55).

Klingenmeyer added a sixth-place finish in the 50 freestyle (:23.74), while Lemke placed eighth in the 500 freestyle (5:25.21) and ninth in the 200 freestyle (1:57.98), and Sam Brewer (2:20.25) and Hamm (2:21.83) took 11th and 13th in the 200 individual medley. Hamm also earned a point by taking 16th in the 100 butterfly (1:04.95).

The T-Birds will host the Badger North Conference meet on Friday. Baraboo went 0-2-2 in conference dual meets this season and took last at the Badger North Relay meet on Dec. 4. The T-Birds placed third out of five teams at last year’s conference meet, led by Lohr’s first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (:54.59). The Sauk Prairie/Wisconsin Heights/Lodi co-op has won back-to-back Badger North titles.
