There will be 11 swimming events at Friday’s WIAA Division 2 state meet in Madison.

The Baraboo High School boys swim team will be competing in nine of them after a strong showing at Saturday’s sectional meet the Thunderbirds hosted at Jack Young Middle School.

Aidan Lohr led the way with two first-place finishes, while Josh Hackbarth, Ethan Klingenmeyer and Jacob Laux also advanced in individual events, and the Thunderbirds advanced in all three relays.

Lohr’s titles both came with school records. The junior’s first victory came in the 200-yard individual medley, as he touched the wall in 1 minute, 55.9 seconds. Lohr followed that up with a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke (:50.72), beating the field by more than 2 seconds.

“He had an amazing day,” Baraboo coach Chris Lemke said. “He’s definitely ready to go for next week.”

“Knowing we are in the fastest sectional, it’s really fun to see what the times will be,” Lohr said. “A lot of the guys who race here are the guys who will race at state.”

Laux will also swim in two individual events — the 100 breaststroke and the 100 butterfly — at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium on Friday. Laux took second in the 100 butterfly (:53.91) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.80).

Hackbarth will close out his senior year by swimming the 200 freestyle at state after taking seventh in the sectional with a time of 1:52.38. Klingenmeyer’s time of 22.21 seconds was good for a runner-up finish in the 50 freestyle, behind Fort Atkinson’s Jeremiah Mansavage (:21.53).

Each of those four will also compete in two relays at state. Lohr, Laux, Mitchell Hamm and Klingenmeyer teamed up to take second in the 200 medley relay (1:39.6) on Saturday, while Laux, Jakob Lemke, Hackbarth and Klingenmeyer took third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:33.1), and Hackbarth, Lemke, Hamm and Lohr finished third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:23.8).

Baraboo finished fourth as a team, scoring 249 points in the 11-team meet. Madison Edgewood won the title with 375 points, followed by Monona Grove (276) and McFarland (253).

This sectional has produced the top Division 2 teams at state in recent years. Monona Grove won its fourth straight Division 2 state title last year, while Edgewood took second. Baraboo scored 119 points to place seventh as a team last year. Jasper Swallen is the only one gone from that group.

Lohr was the only T-Bird to reach the podium last year, taking third in the 200 individual medley (1:56.74) and the 100 backstroke (:52.82).

Baraboo had four more top-10 finishes last year: Hackbarth in the 200 freestyle (eighth, 1:50.38) and the 100 freestyle (10th, :49.66), the 400 freestyle relay team (seventh, 3:22.21) and the 200 medley relay team (eighth, 1:42.55).

Team scores: Madison Edgewood 375, Monona Grove 276, McFarland, 253, Baraboo 249, DeForest 228, Stoughton 165, Whitewater 154, Milton 147, Fort Atkinson 126, Jefferson/Cambridge 61, Platteville/Lancaster 42.
