Local Boys & Girls Club executive director Karen DeSanto tosses beads from atop the Broadway Diner. DeSanto took to the rooftop for 24 hours starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday. By 7 p.m. she had raised well over half of her $10,000 goal. DeSanto planned to be up all night and will be taking donations through 10 a.m. Thursday.
After spending 24 hours atop the Broadway Diner, Karen DeSanto, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of West Central Wisconsin, said she was amazed by the generosity of the community and the richness of the experience.
“I’m just in awe, really, of the community,” DeSanto said in a voice hoarse from yelling into a megaphone for hours. “I’m in awe of how generously people give.”
DeSanto made her ascent to the roof at 10 a.m. Wednesday with a goal of raising $10,000 for the club. The effort, which lasted until 10 a.m. Thursday, exceeded its fundraising goal and welcomed community helpers from Baraboo National Bank to Circus World Museum.

“It was amazing,” DeSanto said. “Especially that last hour push.”
Youngsters from the Boys & Girls Club got in on the action as they helped collect donations Thursday morning. They learned an important lesson about giving, DeSanto said.
People kept stopping by, calling and dropping things off, she added. The event included activities from fitness classes to live musical performances and an impromptu talk show.
That the club exceeded its fundraising goal says a lot, DeSanto said. “It says that people believe in the club and it tells me that the community supports it.”
