The heart of a small community lies in the small businesses that call the community home.
Business owners are neighbors and friends and they are an important part of Blue Zones Project’s vision to make the community, and the people in it, the healthiest and happiest they can be.
The Blue Zones Project demonstration communities of Beaver Dam, Mayville, Horicon and Juneau are home to many thriving small businesses. Fit 4 You Personal Training and Mayville Insurance Agency are two businesses in Mayville that are Blue Zones Project Supporting Organizations.
Susan Retzlaff, owner and certified personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist at Fit 4 You Personal Training, was one of the first businesses to become a supporting organization. Susan shared her enthusiasm for improving well-being at her booth at the Blue Zones Project kickoff event in Mayville last April. She proudly displays the Proud to Support Blue Zones Project sign, window decals, and Power 9 magnets in her studio. Displaying these materials has created opportunities for her to talk about Blue Zones Project and the Power 9 principles with her clients. People in the original Blue Zones areas, places where people live with greater well-being and vitality, share nine healthy lifestyle habits — the Power 9. The Power 9 principles align with Retzlaff’s passion and business of promoting healthy lifestyle practices that extend beyond simple physical exercise. Being part of Blue Zones Project allows Fit 4 You to be involved with a larger community of like-minded well-being advocates.
Mayville Insurance is an independent insurance agency with offices in Mayville and West Bend. A family business started by current owner, Brad Steinbach’s, father in 1947, Mayville Insurance, focuses on serving local individuals, families and businesses. The company prides itself on connecting with customers and treating them like family. The values of making personal connections and putting family first are among the Blue Zones Power 9 principles. Mayville Insurance, has included Blue Zones inspired recipes and information in its customer newsletter communications and it offers Blue Zones inspired options for employees at meetings and special events.
Additionally, Mayville Insurance and Fit 4 You provide an example of how small businesses can impact the well-being of residents and help one another. Mayville Insurance will host a lunch-and-learn for its employees, inviting Retzlaff to share some of her expertise about personal training and improving well-being.
Other small businesses in the communities of Juneau, Horicon and Beaver Dam are part of Blue Zones Project as supporting organizations. Collaboration between these organizations strengthens our community and improves lives of the people who live here.
