109 Knaup Drive Beaver Dam WI

Workers look over the site of the former 109 Knaup Drive building, which was destroyed in a fire last year following a chemical explosion. Work is beginning to rebuild on the site.

Things will soon be back to normal at Village Glen in Beaver Dam where an explosion and fire destroyed an apartment building and left residents homeless.

The building at 109 Knaup Drive destroyed in an intentionally-set fire on March 15, 2018, is being rebuilt, Village Glen managers confirmed Thursday. Further information was unavailable about the project. Workers surveyed the site Thursday afternoon, with the area fenced off and an excavator standing ready.

Some residents have even said they would like to move back in. Bill Graper, the owner of the management company for Village Glen, said last year they intended to rebuild 109, but it was too late in the year to go ahead with bids at that time. He later said construction would start this spring.

The building at 109 Knaup Drive was destroyed after an explosion on March 5, 2018, forced residents to evacuate. Investigators found that Benjamin Morrow had turned his apartment into an at-home chemical lab to create explosive chemicals that blew up while he was inside, killing the 28-year-old. They found white supremacist literature in his home and a collection of weapons and body armor, but officials could not determine a motive for Morrow’s actions.

The volatile chemicals in the apartment posed a serious danger for anyone nearby, and a second, intentional explosion inside the apartment did not mitigate the danger, so the entire building was destroyed by set March , 2018.

It displaced all of the residents in the 16-unit structure and they lost most of their belongings, save for some sentimental objects that were removed by bomb technicians prior to the building’s destruction.
