Beaver Dam receives $25k donation for kayak launch in honor of Jade Wilson

Beaver Dam will have a new kayak launch to honor Jade Wilson.

Wilson died last April in an apartment fire at 600 W. Third St. The Common Council accepted a $25,480 donation from Fritz Friday, Jade’s grandfather, on Monday. He declined to speak about his donation when contacted by phone Tuesday.

The council expressed its gratitude for the donation with a resolution accepting the gift.

The donation will go to the city’s parks department to build the launch in memory of Jade, who loved to kayak. The launch will be at the end of Oneida Street, where there is currently a dead-end street that opens onto the water of the lake.

Mayor Becky Glewen, in announcing the donation, said Wilson kayaked in that area. There will be a marker at the launch to commemorate Wilson.

It will be the second canoe/kayak launch in the city, with the first one located at Waterworks Park.

According to her obituary, Wilson, 24, was born in China and joined her family in Beaver Dam in 2001, graduating from high school in 2014. She volunteered at local food pantries and supported the American Heart Association and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. She was into fashion and was a huge fan of Taylor Swift, Sam Hunt and the Chainsmokers.

Wilson was one of two people killed in the fire. Corrine Bolin, 63, also died.

Former owner Christopher Kuranz donated the land where the apartment once stood with the request that Wilson and Bolin would be memorialized in some way. The land is part of a larger redevelopment project the city has planned, several blocks away from Oneida Street.
