Shannon Cardinal

Former Mayville High School Spanish teacher Shannon Cardinal appears before Judge Gary Sharpe during a preliminary hearing before entering a plea of not guilty Friday afternoon.

FOND DU LAC — Shannon Cardinal appeared before Judge Gary Sharpe and waived her right to a preliminary hearing before entering a plea of not guilty Friday afternoon during her arraignment.

The 43-year-old Oakfield woman, a former Spanish teacher at Mayville High School, was charged with six counts of sexual assault of a student by school staff and six counts of child enticement - sexual contact after it was alleged that she had sex with a 17-year-old former student.

According to the criminal complaint most of the contact took place at her home in Oakfield as well as once in Iowa, where the teen moved. Thus far no evidence was presented to suggest that any contact took place on school grounds.

During Cardinal’s arraignment, her attorney Christopher VanWagner requested that the terms of her bond be changed so she could travel out of state to Minnesota and Illinois for car shows since she runs a company that attends such events. The request was granted.

The remainder of her case will be handled by Judge Dale English.
