Beaver Dam Post 146's Dillon Livingston sacrifice bunted in the top of the fourth that brought home teammate James Jimenez all the way from first base to five their team a 3-2 lead over River Falls during Wednesday's Class A state tournament opening round.

MERRILL — The Beaver Dam American Legion Post 146 varsity baseball team gave everything it had Wednesday against River Falls during the Class A state tournament in Merrill, but fell just short in a heartbreaking loss.

Nick Speckman hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead River Falls to a come-from-behind 4-3 win.

Post 146 fell behind 2-0 after one, but rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the fourth. River Falls knotted the score in the sixth to set up Speckman’s heroics.

“It doesn’t feel good,” Post 146 head coach Dylan Ziegler said. “We played a tough game and anytime you play a good game and you lose, it doesn’t feel good.

“We played well and that’s what we focused on. We try to play well every single game to give ourselves a chance and sometimes that goes our way, sometimes it doesn’t.”

Bayne Johnson got the loss pitching 7⅔ with two strikeouts, but gave up four earned runs on seven hits.

BD will play the loser of the game between Merrill and Holmen today at 1 p.m.

“We’re looking forward now at this point,” Ziegler said. “It hurt and we’re looking forward, and we’re going to get ready for our next game.”Follow Mark on Twitter @mmcmull2.
