Try 3 months for $3

BARABOO — Beaver Dam’s prep boys basketball team led at halftime Thursday night against Baraboo, but the advantage was slim.

That changed quickly in the second half.

The Golden Beavers came out of the break on a 15-3 run to pull away from the winless Thunderbirds and notch a 52-39 Badger North Conference victory.

“They did a good job of slowing the pace down on us in the first half — tried to sort of take the air out of the ball. And we did a much better job of ramping up our press in the second half,” Beaver Dam coach Tim Ladron said. “We moved the ball a little bit better offensively and we caused a few more turnovers — got a couple more easy baskets.”

Max Klawitter and Adam Bird both hit 3-pointers during the second-half opening run for Beaver Dam (7-5, 3-4 Badger North), but it was Nate Abel who carried the torch, pouring in nine of his game-high 16 points over the final 18 minutes.

He was the only one for the Golden Beavers to finish in double figures but nine players in all chipped in — a balanced effort that helped Beaver Dam wash away the bitter taste of Saturday’s overtime loss to Reedsburg.

Baraboo is now 0-13 on the year and 0-7 in league play.

Beaver Dam next plays Saturday at home against Kimberly, the fourth-ranked team in Division 1, according to the coaches poll.
