Columbus' Jordan Link tries to duck under Poynette's Johanna Hutchinson during the first half of the Cardinals' 73-59 Capitol North Conference loss to the Pumas on Tuesday night at Poynette High School. Link finished the game with a team-high 25 points.

POYNETTE — Hanna Walters had the first half that most basketball players can only dream about.

The 5-4 senior guard poured in 26 points in the first 18 minutes for Poynette and sparked a 20-5 run that helped lift the Pumas to a 73-59 Capitol North victory over the Columbus on Tuesday night.

“She does that every time against us,” Columbus coach Tim Dworak said. “We have to find a way to stop her somehow, some way. She’s a good player, she’s a senior and she did what seniors do by leading by example tonight.”

Walters finished with a game-high 32 points and scored the first 15 points of the night for the Pumas (7-4, 2-1 Capitol North). Her hot hand helped to rally Poynette early in the first half.

Columbus (2-10, 0-3) rode the hot hand of sophomore Molly Kahl to take a 15-11 first-half lead with Kahl accounting for nine of the points. Poynette then outscored Columbus 20-5 — with Walters accounting for 13 points during the run — to take a 31-20 lead with 4:29 to play in the half.

Jordan Link, a 5-8 sophomore guard who finished with 25 points for Columbus, nailed a 3-pointer with 59 seconds left in the half to bring the Cardinals to within 39-32. Poynette closed the half with two baskets to give it a double-digit lead that it would not surrender the rest of the night.

Link, who finished the night with four treys, tallied 16 of her total in the second half. She was one of three Cardinals to score in double figures with Kahl adding 12 and senior guard Savannah Olson finishing with 10.

Poynette’s Jalynn Morter finished with 13, all coming in the second half, and teammate Megan Reddeman added 10.
