WAUPUN — Two-goal leads are said to be hard to protect.

The Beaver Dam prep boys hockey team didn’t have any trouble doing so on Thursday morning at the Waupun Community Center, however.

The Golden Beavers got a pair of even-strength goals — both from Sam VanderHoeven — in the first 19 minutes, 25 seconds of the contest and then limited De Pere/West De Pere to just a goal the rest of the way en route to a 2-1 non-conference win over the Voyageurs in game one of the Waupun Holiday Classic.

Beavers goalie Marshall Goodrich stood on his head, stopping 43 of the 44 shots peppered at him to preserve the lead.

Later Thursday, Beaver Dam suffered a 4-1 loss to Evanston (Ill.), but no more information was available in time to be included in this story.

Meanwhile, host Waupun suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to Milwaukee Marquette in its opener at the tournament.

The Warriors (7-2) struck first, going ahead 1-0 on Caleb Baxter’s short-handed goal in the first period.

But the Hilltoppers (9-0) — the 10th-ranked team in the state according to the Wisconsin Prep Hockey coaches poll — were not to be denied, scoring a short-handed goal in the third to knot things back up and then scoring an even-strength goal in OT for the win.

The Warriors and Hilltoppers each played Waunakee later Thursday, but results from those game weren’t available in time to be included in this story.
