The Fond du Lac/Beaver Dam co-op girls hockey team used a three-goal second period to defeat Fox Cities 4-3 in an Eastern Shores Conference game Thursday at Tri County Ice Arena in Neenah.

Fox Cities (15-2, 3-1) is currently the top-ranked team in the state, according to the poll. The fifth-ranked Alliance (12-2, 5-0), a 12-school co-op that also includes Waupun, Dodgeland and Wayland, dealt the Stars (15-2, 3-1) their first conference loss.

This marks the second time the Alliance beat the Stars this season. Fondy/Beaver Dam defeated Fox Cities 2-0 on Nov. 17 in a home tournament at Waupun Ice Arena.

The Stars got on the board first with a first-period goal, but Alyssa Heim found Dayna Jones for the equalizer just 3 minutes, 39 seconds into the second period. About 7 minutes later, Hattie Verstegen scored on a penalty shot that gave the Alliance their first lead of the night. Heim gave Fondy/Beaver Dam a two-goal cushion at 13:48 when she scored off a feed from Beaver Dam’s Drew Deanovich.

The Stars cut the deficit to 3-2 when Madelynn Jablonski assisted Sarah Marvin for a goal just 4:24 into the third period. Deanovich added an insurance goal at 9:26 that proved crucial when Annika Horman scored for Fox Cities at 12:02 to make it 4-3, and the Alliance were able to hold the stars at bay the rest of the way.

Fondy/Beaver Dam goalie Abby Okon finished with 20 saves on the night.
