Whitney Liegl

Mayville's Whitney Liegl (left) joined teammate Alaina Wagner in making first team all-Flyway Conference. Also honored for the Cardinals were Chloe Welak (second team) and Laurel Liska (honorable mention).

There was no doubt about it, Alaina Wagner was one of the best in the Flyway Conference this fall.

At least there wasn’t in the coaches’ minds, as the junior on Mayville’s girls volleyball team was a unanimous first-team all-conference selection. And joining her on the league’s top team was senior teammate Whitney Liegel.

But while those two were the Cardinals’ best players this year, they weren’t the only exceptional ones — junior Chloe Welak made second-team all-Flyway while junior Laurel Liska received honorable mention.

Mayville finished third in the conference with a 4-2 record, trailing unbeaten champion Fond du Lac St. Mary’s Springs (6-0) and runner-up Laconia (5-1). Lomira (3-3) placed fourth.

It was a bit of a trying year overall for Mayville, which according to WisSports.net finished with a 10-26 record. But the Cardinals closed the regular season on a four-game winning streak before suffering a 25-11, 25-15, 18-15, 25-9 loss to Walworth Big Foot in the WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinals.
